Gaspé, le 3 mars 2014. Quelle ne fût pas la surprise de quelques citoyens de Gaspé, ce soir, d'apprendre, lors de la réunion municipale, que du méthane avait été trouvé dans 3 ou 4 puits d'eau potable du quartier Sandy Beach. Lorsque l'employé du ministère de l'Environnement a contacté la Ville pour lui annoncer, celle-ci a répondu qu'il faudrait venir rencontrer les citoyens et leur expliquer ce qui se passe. Pour les gens qui craignaient justement le méthane qui, on le sait, est un gaz très toxique, le dossier vient de prendre toute une tournure.
Sans vouloir semer la panique, le regroupement Ensemble pour l'avenir durable du Grand Gaspé se mettra dès demain, à la recherche d'un expert en la matière. Aussi, l'exécutif du regroupement espère que Gaétan Lelièvre va répondre à leur demande tant répétée pour un laboratoire indépendant qui analyserait l'eau de tous les puits. Lors du dernier échantillonnage, seuls les puits dans un rayon de 2 kilomètres à partir du forage nu.4 ont été testés ainsi que certains autres choisis de façon aléatoire autour du numéro 1, ce que le ministère de l'Environnement avait expliqué par un manque de fonds. Comment un gouvernement peut vouloir se lancer dans un aussi gros projet, sans accorder aux gens, au moins, une analyse de leur eau.
Que sont les Gaspésiens aux yeux de ces élus ? Les élections s'en viennent, M. Lelièvre aura beaucoup de compte à rendre. M. Côté, le Maire de Gaspé,nous a dit qu'il n'avait pas encore d'information sur la provenance ou à qui revenait de décontaminer la flaque de pétrole retrouvée au bout de la rue Toundra, qu'il n'a pas encore la liste des ruisseaux contaminés et qu'il n'a rien appris sur le gaz qui fuit autour du forage nu.1 depuis 11/2 an.

Methane in drinking water wells in Gaspé

Gaspé, March 3 2014
A few Gaspé citizens were surprised to hear tonight during the municipality meeting that methane was detected in 3 or 4 drinking water wells in the Sandy Beach district. When the Environment Ministry employee contacted the Town to advise them, the town told him that he should come meet the citizens and explain to them what is going on. For people who already were afraid of methane, a very toxic gas as we all know, the situation has taken another dimension.
Not wanting to provoke a panic, the group Ensemble pour l'avenir durable du Grand Gaspé will start tomorrow to try to find an expert in this field. Also, the board of the group hopes that Gaétan Lelièvre will answer their much repeated request to have all the wells analyzed by an independent laboratory. During the last water sampling, only the wells within a radius of 2 kilometers from the well no 4 were tested along with others that were chosen at random around well no 1, something the Ministry had justified because of lack of funds. How can a government willing to go ahead with such a big project without providing the people water testing, at the very least.
Do the Gaspé people have any value in the eyes of the elected officials? Elections are coming up, and Mr Lelièvre will have a lot to answer for. Mr Côté, Mayor of Gaspé, told us that there was not enough information yet on the source or who would have to decontaminate the oil slick found at the end of Toundra Street, that he still does not have the list of contaminated streams and that he still has no news about the leaking gas around well no 1 since one and a half years.
