Boule Noire 1978 - 1994

BooBoo came to me long before the Internet. My sister-in-law at the time shows up one day with two kittens from the same litter: a shy female all black one and her very outgoing orange tiger brother who bossed her around too much.

My husband and I lived on the second story of a once one family home right by the Richelieu River, right by the Barrage de Chambly icebreaker. The lease did have a clause that banned pets, but who can say no to 2 kittens from a sister-in-law?

I quickly realized that life would be impossible for the little black one with a brother that kept her out of the water bowl, the food and the litter box. She never challenged him and always backed away. I knew she would never make it in a shelter, and both of us at work during the day, her life would have been impossible with her brother around, so he is the one that was sent to the SPCA.

When she slept, she made this perfect little black ball of fur, so I called her Boule Noire, and also because this black French speaking singer was making the hit-parade in Quebec at the time. But in every day life, she answered to the call of "BooBoo!".

I had never seen a cat such unsure of herself. I became her mother, and showed her all kinds of tricks, brought her on bicycle rides in my basket, walked her on a leash. My husband thought that cats were stupid, until he saw her play fetch.

I won't say that she always had it easy: I was often away at work, and was not always there for her. I lost my temper with her a couple of times, and still regret it. She moved with me to my new house, went through my divorce with me, my time alone at home, the invasion of a new spouse and his 2 older cats. When the 2 cats died of old age, she seemed to miss them, so I went and picked up two siblings: Molly and Paddy, 8 weeks old. But she did not have much longer to live: her legs seemed to no longer work for her, and at some point, she barely could climb the sofa to sleep, and just slid off to urinate and defecate on the floor. After many weeks of covering the floors with plastic sheets and cleaning up coming back from work, I had to put her down. But she was still so beautiful!

Very black, with a piercing gaze, those that did not know her thought she looked nasty, but she had the patience of an angel.

She was put to rest beside her friend and play companion La Fouine (FouFouinne) in the back garden, under the Serviceberry.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For Heater, the jobs and money that oil and gas create don’t come close to outweighing the risks.
“I don’t think the trade-off is worth it. I haven’t thought that from the beginning,” he said. “ I feel like the valley sold its soul to the devil.”
Gaspésie: les forages se poursuivent
Par: Thierry Haroun le mercredi, 17 décembre 2014
Le forage exploratoire Haldimand 4 de Pétrolia à Sandy Beach avance rondement.
Au moment de notre passage sur les lieux, la foreuse du sous-traitant, Precision Drilling, était en pleine action et avait atteint 696 mètres de profondeur. L'expert de Pétrolia, Pierre Houle, a précisé aux journalistes invités, que le forage, qui se poursuit en continue, soit 24 heures par jour avec deux équipes qui se relaient aux 12 heures, pourrait atteindre deux kilomètres.
La valeur total des équipements situés sur le chantier est estimé à plus de 20 millions de dollars. Environ 300 mètres cubes d'eau sont nécessaires pour effecteur les travaux. Vingt-cinq personne y travaillent, principalement en provenance de Calgary. Le forage qui a débuté le 26 novembre devrait être complété vers le 10 janvier prochain. Le potentiel exploitable est évalué à sept million de barils. Les retombées économiques dans la région sont évaluées à quelque 1,5 millions de dollars, a fait valoir la porte-parole de la pétrolière, Marie-Claude Costisella, en point de presse.
Complément d'information:
Haldimand numéro 4 : visite du site et problème de communication
Les relations sont tendues entre Pétrolia et des membres de la presse. La compagnie avait invité les journalistes mardi à visiter le site du puits Haldimand numéro 4. Mais, une fois sur place, l'ingénieur qui est responsable du forage n'était pas autorisé à répondre aux questions des journalistes de la télévision.
Note personnelle: Les médias n'ont pas pu filmer ni questionner l'ingénieur après sa présentation d'une heure. Seule la porte-parole de la compagnie avait la permission de répondre aux médias filmés après la présentation. Il semblerait que le forage se fera horizontalement vers les puits Haldimand 1 et 2. Impossible de savoir quand commencera le pompage de la ressource.
Aussi, il faut savoir que Junex a réussi à sortir 101 barils de pétrole de son puits Galt #4 dernièrement en retirant le reflux du forage. La compagnie prévoit pomper la ressource au printemps prochain.
The drilling is on in Gaspé
My translation of above article:
The exploratory drilling of Haldimand 4 by Petrolia at Sandy Beach is forging ahead.
On our visit on site, Precision Drilling, the sub-contractor drillers, was in full action and had reached 696 meters deep. Pierre Houle, Petrolia's expert, said to the invited journalists that the drilling is going on 24 hours a day on 12 hour shifts and could drill for 2 kilometers.
The total value of the equipment on site is estimated at 20 million dollars. About 300 cubic meters of water is needed to do this work. Twenty-five people work there and most of them come from Calgary. The drilling started November 26 and should be done by January 10. The potential production is estimated at 7 million barrels. Economic downfall in the region is estimated at about $1,5 million dollars says Marie-Claude Costisella, spokesperson of the oil company, during the media briefing.
More information:
Haldimand #4: visit on site and communication problems
Relations are tense between Petrolia and the media. The company had invited journalists Tuesday to visit the well pad of Haldimand #4. But once on site, the engineer in charge of the drilling was not authorized to answer questions from the TV journalists.
Journalists were not able to question and film the engineer after his one hour presentation. Only the spokesperson had the authorization to answer questions from the TV media after his presentation. It seems that the horizontal drilling will be done in the direction of Haldimand #1 and #2. Impossible to find out when extraction pumping will start.
Also, Junex was able to extract 101 barrels of oil while pumping out drilling fluids from its Galt #4 well recently. It plans to start pumping next spring.
It was so full I could no longer move
You were filling up my home till there was no more room left for me. I was slowly suffocating from all the things that you kept buying and bringing from elsewhere, never throwing anything away, even when it was run down, broken or useless.
Now, I am slowly taking back control of my life and of my space: slowly, I'm emptying one room after another, throwing the useless and the broken and the grime away. And slowly I can breathe again. I can find my way in my things again. Slowly, I am pushing back what you would consider useful into corners, into rooms, into spaces that I will have to deal with later.
But for now, one room after another, I am taking back what was unreachable and unenjoyable because of all the stuff that was in the way. One room after another, I am going back down to the rafters, to the subfloor, until I can finish that room till it is completely done. Completely done, easy to clean, easy to enjoy, easy on the eyes.
One room after another, I am taking my life back, so I can enjoy what I have and from there, move forward.
La réalité et les faits sont têtus - c'est pour cela qu'ils finissent par s'imposer.
La réalité et les faits sont têtus. On peut les ignorer, les masquer, les décrire en les déformant, tenter de les contourner, on peut tout faire, ils restent là tels quels, indépendamment de ce qu'on tente de faire avec. Ils sont très têtus et c'est là une force absolument unique qui résiste à tout. Et qu'on peut exploiter.
Dans le dossier du gaz de schiste, dès le début (en novembre 2010 pour moi, mais d'autres étaient déjà actifs bien avant) des faits ont été perçus, de façon floue initialement, intuitivement sans doute chez des personnes clairvoyantes. J'ai alors commencé bien timidement, isolément à fouiller un peu autour de quelques réalités qui pointaient au travers du sol et qui commençaient à devenir progressivement très apparentes. Nous sommes devenus plusieurs à creuser, chacun avec ses outils, chacun avec son expertise propre. La réalité des faits autour de cette proposition d'industrie des gaz de schiste nous a guidé pour déterrer une à une plusieurs évidences.
Nous avons commencé à écrire des textes, des mémoires, des lettres aux ministres. Pas facile de réussir à emmener ces gens à voir les réalités qu'on avait déterrées, dégagées sur le terrain. Il y avait déjà beaucoup de personnes qui grenouillaient autour des gens de pouvoir pour leur montrer d'autres images; des images embellies d'où dégoulinait des dollars et des promesses de richesses. Les dirigeants pensaient n'avoir plus besoin de se déplacer pour venir s'informer sur le terrain: les lobbyistes leur commenteraient le sujet à partir de belles images. Des commissions d'études stratégiques commandaient des modélisations des phénomènes en cause; la commande des études était bien dirigée, bien stratégique justement car le lobby y était présent là aussi. On a produit des modèles qui donnait d'aussi aussi belles images que celles présentées par les lobbyistes. Ça devait donc être vrai toutes ces belles richesses qu'on pouvait avoir simplement en fracturant tout sous nos pieds.
On a continué de notre côté à déterrer, à dégager, à fouiller plus en détails les faits et la réalité. On a fait des conférences, des vidéos de vulgarisation sur cette réalité. On a persévéré sachant que les faits sont têtus; qu'il fallait certes sans cesse revenir sur eux, les rappeler les montrer tels qu'ils sont au plus grand nombre. Ce plus grand nombre est devenu vraiment très grand. On appelle ça maintenant l'acceptabilité sociale; c'est aussi une réalité. Les promoteurs pensaient pouvoir gérer celle-ci avec leurs outils usuels: les firmes de relations publiques. L'opinion publique ça se manipule et les oppositions ça se résorbe quand c'est bien géré pouvaient-ils croire. Mais cela n'a pas fonctionné comme ils l'avaient espéré; plus le temps passait, plus l'acceptabilité sociale diminuait. Les citoyens s'informaient de plus en plus et leur opposition grandissait encore plus.
Le marketing, ça marche mieux avec des boites de lessives qu'avec des tentatives de lessiver les cerveaux. L'industrie se payait comme beaux parleurs des personnalités; pas des experts si on en juge par ce qu'ils racontaient comme balivernes. C'était ce que la stratégie marketing avait conseillé: payer des personnalités prestigieuses pour détourner l'attention des faits. Talisman Energy de Calgary, le plus gros joueur s'était même payé un ancien premier ministre. La stratégie marketing a du être changée à quelques reprises vu ses insuccès manifestes.
Puis sous la pression populaire, sous la nécessité devenue incontournable, le gouvernement a confié au BAPE le soin de vider la question. Les citoyens et les experts indépendants ont alors enfin pu présenter les faits tels qu'ils les ont vécus, trouvés, déterrés. Les commissaires du BAPE ont consigné ces faits dans un rapport qui traite à la fois des études et visions des promoteurs (rapports gouvernementaux et mémoires de l'industrie) ainsi que des mémoires apportés par les opposants. En tranchant entre ces deux positions, les commissaires du BAPE ont fait un remarquable travail qui a permis enfin de nommer, décrire, analyser les faits perçus initialement il y a quatre ans.
Heureusement que les faits ont été têtus, qu'ils soient demeurés indestructibles. Plusieurs mensonges ne résistent jamais devant une vérité quand ils sont enfin placés côte-à-côte.
Merci au BAPE pour ce merveilleux cadeau de Noël.
Merci à tous ceux qui ont travaillé sans jamais douter de ce simple adage: "les faits sont têtus - il suffit d'y tenir et de les ramener sans cesse en avant-plan".
Reality and facts are stubborn: that is why they always come through.
This is my translation of above opinion piece:
Reality and facts are stubborn. We can ignore them, mask them, describe them while deforming them, try to avoid them, we can do all that, but they remain there, as they were, no matter what we try to do with them. They are very stubborn, and that is an absolute unique force that resists everything. And that we can use.
In the shale gas file, ever since the beginning (that is November 2010 for me, but others where very much active much earlier than that) facts were observed, vaguely at first, intuitively no doubt by clairvoyant persons. That is when I slowly started, all by myself, to dig around a bit everywhere around a few realities that pocked through the ground and were starting to become progressively more and more apparent. We had become many to dig up, each with our own tools, each one of us with our own expertise. The reality of facts of this shale gas industry's proposition guided us to dig up one by one many evident facts.
We started to write some texts, papers, letters to the ministers. Not easy to bring these people to see the reality we had succeeded to dig up, cleared up on site. There were already a lot of people who moved around persons in power to show them other pictures: spruced up pictures from which money dripped with promises of more wealth. People in power thought they did not need to go out on site to get information any more: lobbyists would bring them reality with nice pictures. Commissions of strategic studies ordered models of phenomenas; the order of studies was well directed, strategically also because the lobby was also there. Models were produced that also gave nice pictures, as nice as those given by the lobbyists. They concluded it must all be true, all this wealth that would come simply by fracking under our feet.
As for us, we continued to dig up, dig out, rummage through to get more details of facts and reality. We did conferences, videos to make this reality more people friendly. We persevered, knowing that facts are stubborn; knowing that we had to return again and again to facts, to recall them, to show them like they really are to as much people as possible. This greater number has really become very big. Now, we call it social license, social acceptability; that is also a reality. Promoters thought they could manage this with their usual tools: public relations firms. Public opinion can be manipulated, and opposition can be curbed when it is well managed, or so they thought. But it did not work like they hoped it would; as time went by, social acceptability was going down. Citizens were more and more informed, and their opposition kept growing.
Marketing works better with laundry soap than with brain washing. The industry paid nice talking personalities; not experts judging by the unbelievable stuff they kept repeating. That is what the marketing strategy had advised them: pay well-known personalities to distract their attention from the facts. Talisman Energy from Calgary, the biggest player, had even bought itself an ex-PM. The marketing strategy had to be changed a few times because of obvious and many failures.
Then, under popular pressure, under the necessity that became unavoidable, the government gave the BAPE the job of digging up the question. The citizens and the independent experts then finally were able to present the facts as they lived them, as they found them, as they dug them up. The BAPE commissioners put down those facts in a report that covers the studies as well as the vision of the promoters (government reports and industry papers) as well as the papers presented by the opposition. By ruling between these two positions, the BAPE commissioners did a remarkable job that allowed, at last, to describe, to analyse the perceived facts of four years ago initially.
Thankfully, facts have been stubborn, and have remained indestructible. Many lies never resist confronted with the truth when they are put side by side.
Thank you, the BAPE, for this marvellous Christmas gift.
Thank you, all of you that worked without never doubting this simple saying: "facts are stubborn - just hold on to them and forever bring them up front".`
