(Ristigouche-Partie-Sud-Est) Voyant deux projets de sa compagnie en suspens, le président de Gastem, Raymond Savoie, qualifie de «fascistes» les militants écologistes québécois systématiquement opposés à l'exploration pétrolière et gazière.

M. Savoie a fait cette déclaration au Soleil en réaction à la volonté d'élus de la municipalité gaspésienne de Ristigouche-Partie-Sud-Est qui souhaiteraient voir adopter un règlement pour protéger des zones de plusieurs kilomètres autour de sources d'eau souterraines, ce qui menace un projet de forage de Gastem.

«Les chemises vertes»

«C'est un peu farfelu, ça, frivole, ridicule, étant donné qu'ils [les élus] n'ont pas d'expérience. Ils imaginent le pire. Et là, les «chemises vertes» arrivent, avec leur attitude fasciste. Il se fore 15 000 puits par année en Alberta et personne ne s'en plaint», a dit M. Savoie.

«Il y a de bons groupes écologistes avec qui on peut échanger, a poursuivi l'ex-ministre libéral du Revenu et délégué aux Mines. Mais il y en a d'autres, fascistes, qui crient des insultes. Ils crient des exagérations pour rien.»

Raymond Savoie a ensuite parlé d'une rencontre publique tenue à Saint-Léon-le-Grand, dans la vallée de la Matapédia, il y a un an. «Il y a des gens qui pensaient qu'ils allaient mourir, si on forait», dit-il.

Gastem envisage depuis 2011 de forer à Ristigouche-PartieSud-Est un puits stratigraphique pouvant aller jusqu'à 2600 mètres de profondeur.

L'entreprise a obtenu son permis d'exploration en juillet. Le lieu visé est situé en terrain privé, à sept kilomètres de la rivière Restigouche, reconnue pour la pêche sportive, et à 100 mètres de l'un de ses affluents, la rivière Kempt.

Gastem se préparait à y consacrer 3,5 millions $ au printemps, avant que le conseil municipal de Ristigouche-Partie-Sud-Est exprime son intention d'adopter un règlement ressemblant à celui adopté en décembre à Gaspé, où la Ville a stoppé un forage planifié par Pétrolia en janvier.

«Ici, ce sont des puits artésiens individuels, dit la conseillère municipale Micheline Pelletier.La problématique est plus élevée, avec des maisons proches [du forage]. On n'écrira pas un règlement à la sauvette. On va aller chercher l'information auprès d'experts».

C'est un peu la même chose pour un projet de 6 millions $ que Gastem projetait aux Îles-de-la-Madeleine, une initiative moins avancée. Le maire de l'archipel, Joël Arseneau, a indiqué il y a une semaine que son conseil adopterait un règlement de protection de la nappe phréatique.

«Le gouvernement a demandé un BAPE [l'intervention du Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement pour évaluer le projet des Îles]. C'est irresponsable», ajoute M. Savoie, blâmant au passage l'ex-ministre libéral Pierre Arcand. «Au Québec, on a développé un discours de peur, de faux curés.»"

Gastem's CEO says environmental activists are fascists

South-East Ristigouche - While 2 of it's company's projects suspended, the president of Gastem, Raymond Savoie, qualifies as fascists the Quebec environmental activists that are completely opposed to oil and gas exploration.

Mr Savoie did this declaration to the Soleil in reaction to the elected officials of the Gaspésie municipality of South-East Ristigouche that want to vote in a bylaw that would protect a zone of many kilometres around groundwater sources, which would threaten a Gastem drilling project.

"Greenshirts"

"This is a bit harebrained, frivolous, ridiculous, because they (the elected officials) don't have any experience. They imagine the worse. And then, "greenshirts" show up, with their fascist attitude. They drill 15,000 wells a year in Alberta and nobody complains." says Mr Savoie.

"There are good environmental groups with whom we can exchange words with, added the ex Liberal Minister of Revenue and Mines. But there are these others, fascists, that shout insults. They shout exaggerations for nothing."

Raymond Savoie then talked about a public meeting held in Saint-Léon-le-Grand, in the Matapédia Valley held last year. "Some people thought they would die if we went ahead and drilled." he says.

Gastem has been planning to drill in Ristigouche-Partie-Sud-Est since 2011 a stratigraphic well to go 2600 meters down.

The company got it's exploration permit in July. The area to be drilled is on private property, 7 kilometres from the Restigouche River, well known for it's good sports fishing, and 100 meters from one of it's tributaries, the River Kempt.

Gastem was planning to spend $3,5 million in the Spring before the City Council of Ristigouche-Partie-Sud-Est expressed it's intention of voting for a bylaw much like the one voted in Gaspé last December, where the town stopped a Pétrolia drilling project in January.

"Here, there are private artesian wells, says city councillor Micheline Pelletier. The issues are greater, with houses near the drilling. We won't write a regulation hastily. We'll gather information from some experts."

It's a bit the same as a $6 million project planned by Gastem on the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, a project less far along. The archipelago mayor, Joël Arseneau, said last week that his council would adopt a regulation to protect the water table.

"The government asked a BAPE (provincial environmental public hearings body to evaluate the islands project). It's irresponsible." ads Mr Savoie, blaming the ex Liberal Minister Pierre Arcand. "In Quebec, we have adopted a discourse of fear, of false parish priests."
