Friends of the Richelieu. A river. A passion.

"All this region is very level and full of forests, vines and butternut trees. No Christian has ever visited this land and we had all the misery of the world trying to paddle the river upstream."

Photo: Dr David Swann, MD, MLA

"In 2007, David Swann ran for the leadership of the Alberta Liberal Party and lost. During the race, he visited the Calgary offices of Encana to solicit donations. Swann met with Encana VP Gerard Protti and, during their conversation, mentioned Jessica Ernst and the water issues in Rosebud. Protti stopped talking and looked icily at the politician. "Don't you ever mention that name again in our office," he told Swann. Seven years later, the provincial government would appoint Protti to direct the board's latest incarnation: the Alberta Energy Regulator.

To this day, David Swann considers the province's handling of groundwater contamination from coalbed methane activity as "an astounding case of malpractice, negligence, and malfeasance."

For Jessica, things were about to go from bad to worse."
